STUDENT  HANDBOOK

ATTENDANCE

All children are expected to be in attendance and on time each day.  Student absences shall be excused only for the following reasons:  (1) personal illness of the student; (2) death or serious illness in the immediate family; (3) subpoena for court appearance; (4) recognized religious holiday; or (5) any unusual cause acceptable to the principal.  A written note explaining the absence is required when a student returns to school.  Students are allowed to make up work as a result of excused absences.  It is the responsibility of the student to make up assignments and tests within a reasonable time.

The MCS Policy on Unexcused Absences (BOE 5113) has become more stringent.  After 5 (cumulative) unexcused absences, students will be issued a Home Suspension.  Students will receive a Board Suspension and an Unexcused Absence Report to Pupil Services and Juvenile Court upon accumulating 10 cumulative unexcused absences.  Students will receive a Board Suspension for every 5 additional unexcused absences.

TARDIES TO SCHOOL (HOMEROOM)

Some students are tardy to school on a regular basis while many others never are late.  Not only is tardiness a violation of the school district’s attendance policy, students also miss valuable instructional time when they are consistently late.  At Cordova School, there are no Excused or Unexcused Tardies.  Students are either at school and in class on time, or they are not.  Students attending Cordova on an Optional Transfer  jeopardize that transfer and their renewal status with excessive tardies.  Transfers may be revoked for poor attendance and/or excessive tardies.Middle school students should report to the Attendance Office for an admit slip. After five tardies to school, a Conference Request will be issued and parents will have to meet with an administrator to explain the causes of the problem and to ensure that students will be at school and in class on time.  For every five additional tardies, the student will be issued a Home Suspension with a greater number of days out of school on each subsequent occasion, culminating with a referral to Pupil Services.

 ARRIVAL and DISMISSAL

Classrooms are open each day at 7:15 a.m. and school begins at 7:30 a.m.  The cafeteria will open for students eating breakfast at 7:15 a.m.   Students will be dismissed each day at 2:15 p.m.  Students should be completely off campus by 2:30 p.m., or enrolled and attending the after school care program, unless supervised by a teacher for a specific activity.  A warning notice will be issued to students on the first occurrence of being on campus unsupervised after 2:30 p.m.  On the second occurrence, students will be issued a Home Suspension.  Continued occurrences will result in more stringent consequences.  For repeated cases of children being left unsupervised at school for long periods, the Memphis Police Department will be contacted to transport the student to Juvenile Court.  These responses are necessary as there are no adults available to supervise children after 2:30 p.m. and for the safety of our students. Please schedule doctor, dental and other appointments around school hours.  Parents and guardians must come to the Main Office to check out their child, and wait for the child there.  Teachers will not release a child without being notified by the Office first.

 CONFERENCES

We invite and urge parents to consult with their child’s teacher(s), counselor, or an administrator for help with problems.  Please send a note or call the school to arrange a conference.  Teachers are happy to arrange conferences before school, after school, or during their planning time. Teachers cannot be interrupted during class time for conferences.  However, parents and guardians may arrange to visit and observe in the classroom.
Arrangements for this type of visit must be made in the main office.

If a weapon is found as a result of the search, the MPD and Office of Security will be notified.  Any student found in possession of a weapon, real or look-alike, will be subject to disciplinary measures in accordance with the MCS Student Code of Conduct and Board Policies.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE-The Memphis City Schools does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, handicap/disability, or sex in its programs and activities.  No student shall be denied equal access to or participation in, any school sponsored class, activity, or honors program on the basis of the above. Students and their parents/guardians who believe the students have been discriminated against have the right to seek corrective action.  Reports of such incidents must be submitted in writing to the principal.  If the necessary corrective action is not taken, an appeal may be made to the Director of Pupil Services, 2597 Avery Avenue, Memphis, TN 38112.

One of the most important lessons education teaches is self-discipline.  Although not a separate subject, in supports the whole educational structure of the school.  Discipline is the training that develops self-control, character, orderliness and efficiency.  It is the key to good conduct and proper consideration for other people. Therefore, it is the responsibility of each student to operate as a responsible citizen.  The Memphis City Schools establishes the policies governing student conduct.  The administration and faculty of Cordova School uphold these policies.  They are covered in Cordova Middle School’s “Blue Ribbon Plan”. Possession of weapons (real or look alike), alcohol or other drugs, electronic devices (pagers and portable telephones), or other drug paraphernalia is strictly prohibited.  Possession of such items or substances on school property, buses, or at any school sponsored activity on or off campus shall result in an immediate Board Suspension and police involvement.  (Note TCA 39-17-1309; TCA 49-6-4201; the School Security Act of 1981; TCA XVII; the Gun-Free School Zone Act of the Federal Crime Control Act of 1990).

TELEPHONE-Telephones in the office are for business use.  Students may use the office telephones for emergencies only; students should check with a secretary in the office before calling.  Students are not to use telephones in the Guidance Offices or Teacher Workrooms.  Urgent messages will be delivered to students; students will not be called from class to receive telephone calls.

TEXTBOOKS-Students will be issued textbooks after parents sign the Textbook Form.  All books at Cordova are numbered and students are responsible for the books issued to them.  Lost or damaged books must be paid for before students can receive their final report cards or withdrawal papers.

VISITORS-For the protection of the students, all visitors to school must report to the Main Office to sign-in and receive a Visitor’s Pass.  Exceptions are made to this requirement under the following conditions:    1.  Volunteers in the library, or parents/guardians eating lunch with their children, need only to sign-in at the office counter and receive a Visitor’s sticker.  2.  Special instructions will be given for events in the gym or multipurpose room.

VOLUNTEERS & PTSA-Parents and guardians are encouraged to join and be an active participant in the Cordova PTSA.  This group provides needed resources and coordinates voluntary efforts of parents, guardians, and others.  Please contact the principal, assistant principal, or a PTSA board member,
if you wish to volunteer at school.

DETENTION-Students may be assigned to detention by faculty or administration for violations of classroom behavior plans, disruptive behavior, or for being tardy to class.  Students receive a copy of this form to give to their parents.  Failure to attend, or repeated assignments to detention, will result in a suspension.

LOCKERS-Lockers with built-in locks are available for rent by students; the yearly fee is $4.00.  Students may not share their locker with anyone, and should never give out their combination. Lockers are school property and may be opened by authorized personnel at any time.  Students should report any locker problems to one of the assistant principals.

NOTEBOOKS and AGENDAS-Middle school students are required to have a three-ring binder to keep all class information, notes, tests, and progress records together.  Students are also required to use a homework planner, or Agenda, in order to keep track of assignments, projects, tests, etc.  Parents are encouraged to routinely examine the notebook for assignment completion and to help students keep their books neat and organized. Students are provided forms to include in their notebooks to track class progress for each class.  Parents are encouraged to review the forms regularly and to talk with the student about class progress. During any conferences, students will be expected to produce their notebook, the student progress records for the current six weeks, and the homework planner/agenda. The goal of this is to standardize expectations among all grades and to teach organizational skills that will see them successfully through middle school, high school, and beyond.
